95,857 Bibles Sold in New Zealand in One Year
Why More Kiwis Are Picking Up the Bible
There are quiet signs that something is stirring.
Across New Zealand, more people are buying Bibles.
According to Bible Society New Zealand, Christian retailers reported an average 5.43% increase in Bible sales during 2025, with demand expected to remain steady or continue growing through 2026.
Bible Society New Zealand also reported that 95,857 Bibles were sold during the 2025–2026 financial year, up from 89,915 the previous year.
At Manna Christian Stores, Bible sales continue to account for around 42% of all sales, with particularly strong growth driven by churches, schools and special Bible projects throughout New Zealand and the Pacific.
What's Behind This Renewed Interest?
While no one can say with certainty, several trends seem to be contributing.
Many people—particularly younger adults—are asking deeper questions about life, purpose and faith. In a world shaped by rapid technological change, economic uncertainty and global conflict, more people appear to be searching for something solid and enduring.
It's not only standard Bibles that are growing in popularity. Study Bibles, journaling Bibles and beautifully produced gift editions are also seeing increased demand. People aren't simply looking for a book to own—they're looking for a book to engage with.
More Than a Bestseller
The Bible is unlike any other book.
For Christians, it is not simply a collection of ancient writings or wise sayings. It is God's living Word, revealing who He is, His love for humanity, and His plan of salvation fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Throughout history, countless people have found hope, direction and purpose through its pages. Even today, many discover that as they begin reading the Gospels, they encounter not merely information about Jesus, but Jesus Himself.
Scripture scholar Dr Mary Healy reminds us that among all the books Christians read, the Bible stands alone. It is the only book that God Himself is the author of. Through its pages, He continues to speak personally to those who are willing to listen.
As the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us:
"Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword." (Hebrews 4:12)
Where Should I Start?
If you've never read the Bible before, beginning can feel overwhelming.
The Bible is a library of books rather than one long story. You don't need to begin at page one. Instead, begin with the part that introduces you to Jesus.
A great place to start is one of the four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. Many people recommend beginning with Mark, the shortest Gospel, or John, which beautifully reveals who Jesus is.
Read just a short passage each day.
Before you begin, simply pray:
"God, if You are real, help me to understand what You want to say to me."
As you read, ask yourself:
- What does this passage tell me about Jesus?
- What might God be saying to me today?
- How could I respond?
Remember, the goal isn't simply to finish the Bible.
The goal is to encounter the God who speaks through it.

It represents thousands of people opening the pages of Scripture—some for the first time, others returning after many years away.
At the Catholic Enquiry Centre, we see this same quiet movement every day. People are asking questions, searching for hope, and looking for something solid to build their lives on.
Perhaps that is why so many are picking up the Bible.
As Jesus promised:
